SING like Callas and Caruso - Secrets of Body and Voice Balance in Belcanto

New  and revised English Edition by Dr. Karin Wettig, Vocal Coach and Belcanto Singer

..................

Self-awareness is a way to free the inner master and the natural resonant voice you were born with to express your true desires and ideas on this planet. After some weeks of correct training, singing will happen naturally and a colourful firework of exploding joy will occur. Such moments of delightful singing made me understand that the only purpose to live on this planet is to express one’s soul and share this pleasure with others.
Studying not only Belcanto but also the theories about singing and many biographies of famous singers since 1600, I found insights about the castrato tradition and the anatomy of the vocal function. History of Belcanto taught me that a human voice basically has no gender and doesn’t age. The gender comes into the voice only through the body form and the size of the voice box, throat and the resonance cavities. A voice box itself functions so easily that it is not even touched by age in case the body stays in perfect condition. These insights made me curious about the fact that audiences love extreme pitches in voices like the dark male sound of female voices in the lower pitch we find in Adelina Patti, Maria Callas or Grace Bumbry and at the same time the high metallic soprano range of a few outstanding men who sound neither male nor female like the Greek Sopranist, Aris Christofellis and the astounding British Soprano, Greg Pritchard, who came on stage in Britain’s got Talent 2010. In fact, Greg appeared to me like the reincarnation of the famous castrato Farinelli.
Historical and biographic parts of this book will touch the ground of the Belcanto ideal with the “dark and light” timbre, the so called “chiaroscuro” of a fully developed opera voice. Born as a Renaissance child, formed in the Romantic epoch by opera composers like Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and the French school, Belcanto is still fascinating 400 years later. Belcanto seems not to originate from humans on earth but Ancient Gods in heaven.
The genderless human singing voice of golden or silvery timbre, piercing like a trumpet, bathing in all shades of colours, blended with ornements like trills and jumps, exploding with divine joy since the times of the castrato singers seems to have been constantly driven to upgrade virtuoso skills by a restless desire to overcome all human voice restrictions by creating a style free of physical limits like a divine display of fireworks. Since female voices were allowed to appear on stage they even outperformed the castratos.
My personal conviction is that it seems to be an innate tendency of our soul angels to overcome all limits of the physical world by passionate singing on the way back home to heaven.

Karin Wettig
